Merrill Reese honored with prestigious Pete Rozelle Award

During his iconic call of the final play of Super Bowl LII, which resulted in the first Lombardy Trophy in franchise history, Merrill Reese declared from the SportsRadio 94WIP booth, "Eagles fans, this is for you!"

Well, Merrill, this one is for you.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame announced on Thursday morning that Reese, the longest-tenured play-by-play announcer in the NFL, is the 2024 recipient of the Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award. Reese will be celebrated alongside the Pro Football Hall of Fame's Class of 2024 in Canton, Ohio on August 2-3.

"I cried. I was overwhelmed," Reese said as his phone was starting to swarm with congratulations from across the football world.

Reese said that he received a call on Wednesday afternoon from Canton. Curious, Reese answered, and it was Pro Football Hall of Fame President Jim Porter telling him the news of the award. Reese, the Voice of the Eagles since 1977, was ironically told to be silent.

Clint Hurtt says not to forget this player at defensive tackle

Clint Hurtt understands the dynamic in his defensive line room: The elder statesman among the tackles is Milton Williams, all of 25 years old in his fourth season. The pieces of clay to mold include former first-round picks Jordan Davis (entering Year 3) and Jalen Carter (Year 2).

The possibilities are exciting.

"Making strides and it's a work in progress," said Hurtt, the team's senior defensive assistant/defensive line coach who worked for two seasons with coordinator Vic Fangio in Chicago and then spent seven seasons in Seattle, two as defensive coordinator. "Jalen has been really good. He's grown and matured so much and it's been a pleasure to coach him. Jordan is a huge man, long arms. He's strong. He can get up and down and make tackles in the tackle box. Being in great shape is the key for him.

John Ross draws inspiration for his comeback from his son, Kyrie

"I knew that I had to hit the ground running," said wide receiver John Ross about his mentality when he received an invitation to attend the Eagles' Rookie Minicamp following the 2024 NFL Draft as a tryout player. "I was so excited. It could have been anything. It could have been me versus a bunch of kids in Philly middle schools. I would have been here and been happy."

This is the story of John Ross, at one point the fastest man in the history of the NFL Combine who ran a 4.22 40-yard dash that, combined with his production at the University of Washington, propelled him into the top 10 (ninth overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Six years and 62 receptions later, Ross retired from the NFL. Injuries and inconsistencies marred his play and, frankly, he was in what he calls "a bad place."

So he called it quits.
